Few people have had the opportunity to travel and experience the changing world so quickly and at such a young age. Join James Gillespie as he recalls being born the son of Baptist Missionaries, life in China before World War Ii, life under the Japanese occupation of China, his father's imprisonment in a Japanese concentration camp, a time when non-essential Americans were being told to leave, and many other important episodes from the other side of the world of which most Americans weren't even aware. With a natural writing style that makes you feel like you're sitting down next to him around a campfire, the author unfolds tale after tale of adventure, tragedy, humor, heartache and the power of a family's love against impossible odds. Most pleasant are his memories of acclimating to life in America after the war, and the strong bond with his identical twin brother. . .including their exciting and unpredictable adventures in biology, chemistry, amateur radio, and hitchhiking in those "safer" days long ago.

I purchased this book as a gift for my mother for Christmas and she couldn't put it down. She said "it was like traveling back to an earlier time in our countries history when things were simpler and people were kinder to one another." Gillespie has an easy, and engaging story telling style that makes you long for the good old days. Thanks Mr. Gillespie, and I hope you keep on writing:)Product details

Around the World and Headed South James P Gillespie 9781300874447 Books Reviews
I found this book most interesting and very easy reading. Those in a local church would find that they too would be transported to the mission field by the reading of this very informitive book. The book was difficult to put down.
James Gillespie recounts the days of his childhood and youth with a plain-spoken but eloquent style. Born in China as a twin son of Baptist missionaries, Gillespie narrates the events of a young life split between two continents-- contrasting the turmoil of pre-World War II China under Japanese occupation with the often stark realities of the 1930's Depression in rural North Carolina-- then continuing to depict how the drama of World War II deeply affected his family. His stories are by turns whimsical, humorous, and poignant, told with grace and charm.
